Introducing: Reading FUNdamentals

It is my great pleasure to introduce to you... Reading FUNdamentals Tutoring Service! This business venture started as an idea that sparked several months ago.  I have always enjoyed reading and have had the opportunity to instill that same love for reading in my students.  I am currently one semester and a summer session away from obtaining my M.Ed in Reading...ahhhh! Throughout the duration of the program, I have gained a deeper understanding of the reading process and how to teach reading.  It is much more than memorizing words, letters, and sentence structures.  It's more than passing something your child's teacher asks them to do every night.  Reading is essential...literacy is essential.  As the current state of education stands, there is SO much emphasis placed on literacy (and rightfully so).  And NOW, let me turn my attention to anyone who knows a struggling reader--parents, aunts, uncles, cousins, friends of family...! 

It can be a daunting, excruciating task to get a child who hates reading to read.  Often times, it is the struggling readers who dislike reading so much because they do no feel adequate.  It is not fun to engage in an activity that you do not enjoy.  That is where my heart is...I want all kids to enjoy reading.

My mission is to cultivate a love for reading, to provide foundational literacy skills to increase reading proficiency (comprehension, accuracy, and fluency), and to build more confident, engaged readers.  

Reading FUNdamentals provides:

• one-on-one individualized reading instruction for K-5 students including;

o   building phonics knowledge and phonemic awareness

o   providing sight word instruction

o   utilizing decoding strategies

o   building oral and written comprehension

o   enhancing reading fluency

o   increasing spelling/phonics knowledge through word study

• a safe place for students to learn and grow

• developmentally appropriate literacy activities

• access to a variety of quality leveled texts that build confidence and support growth

• research based instruction that is aligned with the K-5 TRC/Dibels goals for North Carolina

FAQ's

Q:  What is the difference between Reading FUNdamentals and other popular tutoring services?
A:  Reading FUNdamentals provides intensive one-on-one instruction.  In order to provide the best, most individualized support, no group sessions will be provided.  An individualized lesson plan based on research based methods will be implemented for each client.

Q:  What is the process?
A:  After inquiring about Reading FUNdamentals, a consultation meeting will be scheduled.  This consultation is free of charge.  In this meeting, I generally conduct 3 assessments in order to get a solid understanding of clients' needs.  After the assessments, we discuss things such as session frequency, clients' strengths and weaknesses, and a plan of action.

Q:  Who is eligible?
A:  Any child in grades K-5.  I will accept Pre-K students who will be entering kindergarten soon.

Q:  Is Reading FUNdamentals only for struggling readers?
A:  Of course not! Anyone who desires to increase reading proficiency, comprehension, fluency, etc. is welcome--whether you want to catch up or get ahead.

Q:  Does Reading FUNdamentals offer tutoring for other subjects?
A:  I specialize in all things reading.  If you need recommendations for math or other subjects, I would be happy to point you in the right direction.
